Paul Krugman: Why does everyone need to own a home?

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

He’s abso-funk-and-wagnalls-lutely right. Why should everyone own a home? Personally, I don’t like to mow. I also like having someone else trim my hedges. And I don’t mean that in a dirty way. (Well, a little bit.) Home ownership and having children are the number one causes of bankruptcy in the US. The concept of universal home ownership has created the suburban deathscape. And why do we provide tax breaks to wealthy homeowners and not to us poor renter folks?

But mostly, it’s about the mowing. I’ll buy a home if they’ll subsidize lawncare. I say, “Lawncare before healthcare!”

James Bond Gets Pussy Galore

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

Master Pancake Theater manages another hilarious sendup of James Bond’s best film, Goldfinger. And yes, there are plenty of horrible puns on Bondgirl Galore. (”Mounds O’ Snatch? Cornicopia of Clitoris? Pounds of Putang?”) The silliness abruptly stops at the “Stop the Movie” segment, when the gang tries a live comedy skit that almost always falls flat. But up until that point, expect to laugh until it hurts, and then laugh some more.

Shoes for Darfur

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

The UUAustin is collecting shoes for Darfur. If you have older shoes, but wearable, please let me know, and I’ll pick them up and take them to UUAustin. I’ll even chip in the $2 needed to ship them to Darfur, although collections are welcome.

From their newsletter:

Please don’t throw away your used (but still wearable) sneakers, running shoes, and tennies. We’ll
be collecting your donated shoes (all sizes) from now until Labor Day.
The shoes will be shipped to the Canadian group, Sole Responsibility. They will then be sent to
the United Nations High Commission on Refugees who will carry the shoes to Darfur. Since the
shipping costs are quite high, we ask that you contribute $2.00 along with each pair of shoes.
We are all aware that the first needs of those refugees in Darfur are food and water but it has been
established that shoes give these people another essential…HOPE.
We will have a table in the Gallery on Sundays to receive your shoes. Or you may drop your
shoes into the box in the Sanctuary foyer by the south entry doors.
