Superhero Supplies Available Now

My friend Maya, who is now 4, could use some superhero supplies. Although she’s already well-supplied - she has a ring that turns people to ice, one that reheats them, one that can bust anything… plus her flying powers, invisibility, and the superhuman skill of hiding under the bed during hide-and-seek every single time.

As for me, my superpowers are limited to infrequent blogging and a strange reaction to fake cheese on pizza. But I did rekindle a small interest by picking up Neil Gaiman’s rekindling of the Eternals, Jack Kilby’s original Marvel comic.

One of the covers for Eternals #2

This limited series is interesting since it’s the first comic that Neil has penned for Marvel (that I know of), and it introduces a whole new mythic dimension to the Eternals. It also ties into Marvel’s summer Civil War series, with mutants taking sides against each other in a struggle of security versus civil liberties… partially a commentary on our times and partially just a chance to see Wolverine completely discintigrated in Wolverine #43.

Something about comics is fitting for those lazy summertime afternoons when you can lean pack and peel off the pages. I myself was never a huge comic book fan. My first comic book was Star Wars #1 (both the regular and super large sized editions). I really dug Gaiman’s classic Sandman series (more than most of his work in general). But getting into a series, checking on it routinely, knowing all the ins and outs of the characters never appealed to me. In fact, fiction in general has always kept it’s distance from me. Perhaps it’s time to re-evaluate it, and what better place to start than with the Eternals?
