Bush: A Theory
There’s been a bit of discussion lately that the White House asks for questions before a Bush press conference, otherwise it won’t accept the reporter’s inquiries. I have no idea how true this is or not. But this report, coming from different sources, coupled with this Bob Woodward report that Karl Rove wants people to think that Cheney is in charge, makes me suspect that there is some cunning dynamic at work.
Let’s look at this logically. What are the possibilities?
- Bush is an intelligent leader and tries to appear this way in public.
- Bush is an intelligent leader but often plays the fool in public.
- Bush is an idiot but appears a strong leader in public.
- Bush is an idiot and appears that way in public.
Let’s look at each of them carefully. As much as I hate to say it, #4 isn’t true. Bush and his cabinent are far too competent at what they’re trying to do to be idiots. Not that I agree in the least with their goals or motives, but they are successful.
#1 and #3 is largely untrue is popular opinion is right.
So why could #2 be true? Why would Bush appear to be foolish in public? Why create the illusion? What are the recent facts that support this?
- Bush’s recent press conference. He was uneasy, unsure, and couldn’t answer basic questions, even though the questions were likely known (or could be guessed) before the conference.
- By consenting to appear at the September 11th commision only with Cheney, he appears to be a puppet.
